A classroom stock market game for economics lessons

Market Mayhem gives students virtual money and a shared fictional market. Headlines change conditions; students decide what to buy, sell or keep in cash. Use those decisions to discuss opportunity cost, diversification and the difference between a good explanation and a lucky result.

Lead the activity

Create a room, share its code and start when the class is ready. Pause trading for discussion, queue lesson questions and adjust the market pace. Save a private lesson template to reuse settings and questions with a fresh group.

Make the debrief count

Compare portfolio outcomes and ask students to explain a decision using the news and their trade history. Finished sessions include a recap and reflection prompts. The aim is to examine reasoning, not just reward the highest return.

Do students need accounts?

Students join with a six-character room code and an approved nickname, without an email account. They need the same browser and device to return to their portfolio. Teachers manage sessions through their educator account.

Is this real trading?

No real money is invested and no brokerage orders are placed. Classroom markets are fictional simulations. The game simplifies markets so a class can examine choices and outcomes together.
